Nathan Butterfield was born in Thornton, Bradford in about 1845
On the 1851 census he is listed as being 6 years old and living in Bradford.
On the 1861 census he is listed as being 16 and living at Gildersome working as a harrier in a coal mine.
Nathan was married on April 9th 1865 at Rothwell to Sarah Jane Lupton, he was aged 20 and was working as a miner.
On the 1871 census he and Sarah were living at Gildersome as a coal miner and had a two year old son, Albert.
Nathan was killed at the Joshua Bowers & Sons, West Allerton Colliery on the 8th April 1872. He was a driver and was crushed by corves. He was 27 years old.
He was buried at Gildersome on the 11th April 1872
On the 28th April 1872 his son John Herbert was baptised at Allerton Church.
