Allerton Bywater Colliery (Mining Deaths)

The Allerton Bywater colliery operated from around 1876-1992 and was the third colliery in the village, the other two being Fentons Warren house (1756-1820) and Carters Haigh Moor (1840-1875).
During this time the group has found 112 deaths cause by accidents at the colliery. This number is changing as we discover more accidents that resulted in death at a later date. Where to draw the line from the accident occuring to the date of death is a difficult one and we are drawing on the experience and advice of others who have done the research in the past.

Where we have undertaken research into the individuals in this list we have added a ‘More Info’ button that will display this extra info when clicked/pressed on.

As a mark of respect to living relatives we have taken the decision to only show extra info on the accidents that occurred before Vesting Day (1st January 1947) when the coal industry was nationalised.

Because of the complexity of the research we are sure to have got facts and dates wrong. We will also have omissions. As this area is under continual research we will correct as soon as discovered.
