Alfred Ely Hopwood was born in the 3rd Quarter of 1910, his birth was registered at Pontefract.
1911 Census – Alfred age 9 months – born in Mickletown, Methley, is at home with his father John age 38 – occupation Coal Miner, his mother Lucy age 38 born in Methley – no occupation, brother Henry age 16 born in Methley – occupation Colliery Labourer, sister Lily age 12 born in Methley – scholar, sister Florence Mary age 5. They are living at Cutler Lane, Methley.
1921 Census:- Alfred age 11 years 4 months – scholar is at home with his father John age 49 – occupation Coal Miner (Out of Works) for Briggs & Son, his mother Lucy age 48 years 11 months – occupation Home duties, brother Allan age 19 years 4 months – occupation Labourer at Coal Pit for Briggs & Son (Out of Work), sister Florrie age 15 years 6 months – no occupation, brother Ernest age 7 years 2 months – scholar. Also living there are Lucy Ingham (nee Hopwood Ely) age 22 years 6 months and her husband John Harold Ingham age 23 years 4 months – occupation Coal Cutter (Below Ground) for Briggs & Son, and their son Kenneth age 3 months. They are living at 17 South View, Methley.
On the 6th February 1938 Alfred Hopwood Ely was moving two tubs from the top deck of the cage when one of them fouled the Tub Catch on the cage, he was releasing the catch to allow the tubs to be taken of the cage when the Head Banksman at the Lower Deck signalled “Cage Aye” and he was injured by the descending cage and he died 6 hours later.
Alfred Hopwwod Ely age 27 was buried at St.Oswald’s Church, Methley on the 19th February 1938.
