Jabez Watson Sawyer was born on the 21st June 1880 and was Baptised at All Saints Church, Normanton on the 5th February 1882 on the same day as his sisters Amelia and Edith Mary were baptised.
1881 Census:- Jabez Watson Sawyer age 9 months is with his father Atkinson age 31 – born in Methley occupation Coal Miner, his mother Mary age 32 born in Leeds – no occupation, sister A??? E age 8 – scholar, brother Arthur age 5 – Scholar, sister Maria age 4 born in Methley, and sister Emily age 2 born in Castleford. They are living at Barraclough House, Normanton Road, Normanton.
1891 Census:- Jabez now age 10 – scholar is living with his father Atkinson age 41 – occupation Coal Miner, mother Mary age 43 (Census Record now states she was born in Oldham, Lancashire) sister Minnie age 11 born in Castleford – scholar, sister Edith age 8 born in Normanton – scholar. They are living at 7 Burnley Row, Methley.
1901 Census:- Jabez age 20 is still at home with his father Atkinson age 51 – occupation Coal Miner Hewer, his mother Mary age 53 – no occupation and his sister Edith age 19 – no occupation. They are still living at 7 Burnley Row, Methley.
Jabez Watson Sawyer age 30 was married on the 24th December 1910 to Tilson Elizabeth Pilsworth age 24, at St Oswalds Church, Methley. She was living at st Margarets Vicarage at the time of the wedding. Jabez was living at Church Lane, Methley.
1911 Census:- Jabez age 30 occupation Colliery Labourer, is now living with his wife Tilsye age 25 -no occupation, she was born in Hepworth, Lincolnshire, and they are living at Church Lane, Methley.
1921 Census:- Jabez age 41 occupation Coal Miner Hewer at T & RW Bowers Allerton Colliery. (Locked Out) he is living with his wife Tilsye age 35 years 1 month – Home Duties and their two children, daughter Mary born in Methley, age 6 years 9 months – full time at school and daughter Louis born in Methley age 2 years 10 months. The 1921 Electoral register shows them living at Church Lane, Methley.
On the 10th January 1936 Jabez was working at the coal face at T & RW Bowers colliery, he had advanced 4ft and had set a temporary prop to continue working, an unsuspected pot hole fell and knocked out the prop and he was trapped by his head and killed.
Jabez age 55 was buried at St Oswalds Church Methley on the 14th January 1936.
