Robert Saville was born in 1839 and was Baptised on the 19th September 1859 in the Parish of Woodkirk, West Riding of Yorkshire.
1841 Census: Robert age 2 is with father Francis age 40 – occupation Cordwainer ( A Cordwainer is a Shoemaker and not a Cobbler who repairs shoes), mother Maria age 35 – no occupation, siblings Francis age 11, brother Benjamin age 9 and brother Richard age 5. They are living in West Ardsley, West Riding of Yorkshire.
1851 Census:- Robert now age 11 – occupation Coal Miner is living with father Francis age 52 – occupation Agricultural Labourer, mother Maria – no occupation, siblings Benjamin age 19 – occupation Coal Miner, Andrew Soloman age 6, and brother Richard age 15 – occupation Apprentice Shoe Maker. They are living at Westerton, West Ardsley.
Robert age 21 was married to Elizabeth Wainwright age 18 on the 27th May 1860 at Woodkirk Parish Church.
1861 Census:- Robert age 22 – occupation Coal Miner is now living at 41 Shepherd Inn, Leeds with his wife Elizabeth age 19 – no occupation and son Arthur age 4 months.
1871 Census:- Robert age 32 – Occupation Coal Miner, now living at Haigh Moor, West Ardsley with his wife Margaret age 29 – no occupation and children Arthur age 10, daughter Adah age 8, son Luther age 4 and daughter Penninah age 2.
1881 Census:- Robert now age 42 occupation – Underground Viewer, and his family have now moved to Allerton Bywater and are living at 56 Victoria Street. He is with his wife Margaret age 39 – no occupation and their eight children. Arthur age 20 – Coal Miner, Luther age14 – Colliery Pony Driver, daughter Penninah age 12 – Scholar, Hannah age 9 – Scholar, Ernest age 7 – Scholar, Enoch Olive (Clive?) age 6, Rhoda age 4 and Francis age 8 months.
1891 Census:- Robert age 52 is now a Colliery Manager and is living with his family at 27 Mill Street, Bowers Row, Margaret age 49 – no occupation, Hannah age 19 – no occupation, Rhoda age 13 – no occupation, Enoch age 16 – Colliery Pony Driver, Ernest age 17 – Colliery Pony Driver and Louis age 7 – Scholar.
On the 19th May 1894 Robert Saville was involved in an accidental Gas Explosion while he and two others, James Davison and Samuel Newell were installing pipework to extract gas from mine workings at T & R W Bowers Allerton Main Colliery (Albert Mine) and died on the 23rd May 1894. Unable to find a UK Coal Mining Accident and Deaths Record. An Inquest was held at the Angel Inn, Allerton Bywater and after a summing up the jury recorded an “Open Verdict” as there was no blame attached to anyone. Robert Saville was buried on the 31st may 1894 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Woodkirk , West Riding of Yorkshire.
His wife remained in Allerton Bywater and lived at Ninevah Farm, Allerton Bywater, 1901 Census shows her age 59 living with three sons, Ernest age 27, Enoch age 26 and Louis age 17. On the 1911 Census she is still at Ninevah Farm with her son Ernest age 37,
On the 1921 Census Margaret age 79 is still at Ninevah Farm with her son Ernest 37. Margaret died age 79 years in August 1921 and was buried on the 17th August 1921 at St Mary’s Church, Woodkirk
