Charles Firth was born in Great & Little Preston in 1826.
1841 Census:- Charles age 17 occupation Engineman, is living at home with his parents, George Firth age 45 occupation Coal Miner and his mother Sarah age 50.
Charles was married to Jane Wilkinson on the 12th April 1847 in Leeds, his occupation on the marriage certificate is down as a Smith the same occupation as his fathers, but on Census Records they were both Coal Miners (Another mistake/mystery)
1851 Census: Charles age 24 (not 27) occupation Coal Miner is living with his wife Jane age 25 no occupation and their two children Edward age 2 born in Little Preston and Reuben George age 2 months born in Little Preston and are living at Little Preston.
Jane Firth died in October 1860 and was buried at St Mary’s Church, Kippax on the 15th October 1860.
1861 Census:- Charles age 37 is now a widower and living in Little Preston with his children Edward age 12 Scholar, Reuben George age 10 Scholar, Sarah age 8 – Scholar and Alfred age 2, all the children were born in Little Preston.
1871 Census;- Charles now age 46 occupation Coal Miner is still living at Little Preston with his children, Edward age 20 (not 22) occupation Coal Miner, Reuben George age 18 (not 20) occupation Wheelwright, daughter Sarah age 18 no occupation and son Alfred age 12 – scholar also living there is Hannah Thompson age 55 occupation Servant/Housekeeper.
1881 Census:- Charles age 56 is still at Little Preston and living with his daughter Srah age 28 – no occupation and son Alfred age 22 occupation Joiner.
Charles age 60 (on the Church burial details his age is 62) was in an accident on the 26th May 1886 at Locke & Co Kippax Colliery he was run over by corves and was killed. He was buried at St Mary’s Church Kippax on the 29th May 1886.
