Moses Connell was born on the19th March 1856 in Whitkirk, Leeds and was baptised on the 13th April 1856 at St Mary’s Church Swillington.
1861 Census :- Moses age 5 is living with his parents father Robert age 31 occupation – Labourer and his mother Emma age 29, also living there are his sister Elizabeth age 9 and younger sister Mary Ann age 3 months, they are living at Astley near Swillington.
(As a note of interest on the same Census form are the occupiers of Swillington House, head of which is Baronet John Henry Lowther and his staff)
1871 Census :- Moses now age 15 is occupied as a Colliery Pony Driver and is living at Old Engine, Old Row, Astley with his parents Robert age 42 Colliery labourer and Emma age 41, also living there are his sister Elizabeth age 19 occupation General Servant, sister Mary Ann age 9 Scholar, brother David age 7 – Scholar, sister Emily age 4 and brother Fred age 1.
1881 Census :- Moses age 25 his occupation is Coal Miner, is still living at Old Engine, Old Houses, Astley with parents Robert age 52 and mother Emma age 50, brother David age 17 occupation Coal Miner, sister Emily age 15 – Scholar, brother Fred age 11 – scholar, Amos age 8 – Scholar, sister Hannah age 11 – Scholar, Elizabeth his elder sister now has a daughter Fanny age 6. (Fanny died in 1892 age 17)
On the 20th February 1888 Moses was working at the Allerton Main Colliery owned by T & RW Bowers, when there was a fall of roof which fractured his lower spine, he was taken to Leeds Infirmary where he died on the 26th February 1888. An Inquest was held at Leeds Town Hall by the Leeds Borough Coroner Mr Malcolm, the verdict of Accidental Death was recorded.( Unable to find a Coroners Report)
Moses was buried on the S1st May 1888 at Mary’s Church Swillington.
