George Ely was born in 1889 in Castleford and was baptised on the 26th March 1889.
On the 1891 census he was 2 years old. His parents, Joseph & Ethel lived at Bridge Street Castleford and Joseph was a miner.
On the 1901 census he was 12 years old and lived at 51 Ambler street Castleford
On the 1911 census he was 22 years old and lived with his parents at 51 Ambler street Castleford. George worked as a miner/hewer.
On the 1921 census George lived at 81 Ambler street with his wife, Elizabeth and two children. He worked at Allerton Bywater Colliery.
George was a deputy at the Allerton Bywater colliery when he was overcome by methane and died.
The coroner put the blame sqarely at George’s door. (Inquest report below)
