Richard William Armitage was born circa 1872 in North Newbald, East Yorkshire , he was baptised on the 29th December 1872.
1881 Census:- The family have now moved to Castleford, West Riding of Yorkshire and are living at 5 Sagar Street, Castleford with William Ayers and his family. George Armitage is William’ Ayers Brother in Law.
Richard William is age 8 and a scholar and is living with his father George age 39 – occupation Cartman, mother Mary Ann age 39 – no occupation, sister Mary. A age 11 – scholar, and brother Thomas. H age 3.
At the time of the accident the family had moved to Lily Street, Oulton near Woodlesford.
Richard was working at the T & RW Bowers – Allerton Main Colliery as a Pony Driver, on the 25th February 1890 he was involved in an Accident whilst moving Corves in the Colliery, reading the Coroners Report it looks like he was riding the pony when he struck a post that was supporting the roof and his leg was getting crushed. Taken home on an ambulance carriage, Mr Taylor attended and found that his spinal cord was affected, over time there was no improvement and was taken to Leeds Infirmary but remained in the same state and was eventually taken home after developing bed sores which his mother and Mr Taylor attended to.
Richard died at about quarter to three in the morning of the 3rd December 1890 age 17. Coroners Verdict was Accidental Injury.
Richard William Armitage was buried at St John’s Church, Oulton on the 6th December 1890
