1856 – George Hepworth

George Hepworth was killed at the T.M Cater & Co. Allerton Bywater colliery on 27th June 1856.

The Inspectors report into the incident gave the following conclusion;

Transcript of the above report
Accident No. 26 in the Tabular List.
At Allerton Bywater Colliery, near Pontefract, a young boy was imprudently crossing from one side of the shaft to the other, underground, when he was crushed, unaware by the descending cage, and killed on the spot.
There was not a road excavated along side this pit bottom, (as there should have been,) to enable persons to pass unexposed to the danger attendant on falling substances in shafts; I therefore advised the agent forthwith to make such alterations as would tend to obviate the recurrence of similar mishaps in future; and he readily consented to carry my suggestions into effect.

George Hepworth was from Lofthouse. He was burried at Rothwell church June 29th 1856 aged 10 years.
