Walter Hughes was born in the First Quarter of 1859 and was Baptised at St John\u2019s Church, Oulton on the 19th<\/sup> June 1859.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1861 Census:-Walter age 2 is living with his Father John age 38 \u2013 occupation Cordswainer (Shoe Maker) who was born in Bangor, North Wales and his Mother Ann age 36 \u2013 no occupation, who was born in Oulton, West Riding of Yorkshire, brother Arthur age 8 \u2013 Scholar, born in Woodlesford, sister Mary age 5 \u2013 Scholar, born in Woodlesford, and younger brother Henry age 3 months, born in Woodleford. No address shown on Census Form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1871 Census:- Walter now age 12 \u2013 scholar is still with his Father John age 48 occupation Shoe & Boot Maker, and Mother Ann age 47 \u2013 no occupation, bother Arthur age 19 \u2013 occupation -Stone Mason, and brother Henry (written as Harry on Census Form)  There is no address on the Census Form, just listed as Woodlesford. His sister Ann is not shown on Census Records for 1871, but she was married to James Ellis in 1877)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1881 Census:- Walter age 22 \u2013 occupation Labourer, is still at home with his Father John age 60 \u2013 occupation Shoe Maker, brother Henry age 20 -occupation Coal Miner (Unemployed) Also living there are James Ellis age 27 born in Newsham Green \u2013 occupation Coal Miner and Ann Ellis (nee Hughes) age 26 \u2013 no occupation, their children John William age 3 and Mary Ann age 1. They are living at Princess Street, Woodleford. His mother Ann died in 1877.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1891 Census:- Walter age 32 \u2013 occupation Coal Miner is still living with his Father John age 73  – occupation Bootmaker, brother Henry age 30 \u2013 occupation Coal Miner, also living there are his sister Mary Ellis age 35 \u2013 no occupation and her husband James Ellis age 34 \u2013 occupation Quarry  Labourer, their children John William age 13 \u2013 Scholar, Mary Ann age 11 \u2013 scholar and Herbert age 9 \u2013 Scholar. They are living at Princess Street, Woodleford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1901 Census:- Walter now age 42 \u2013 occupation Coal Miner (Hewer) is now living with his brother in law James Ellis age 45 \u2013 occupation Brewery Labourer, his wife Mary age 45 \u2013 no occupation, their children Mary Ann age 21 \u2013 no occupation and Herbert age 19 \u2013 occupation Farm Labourer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the 17th<\/sup> October 1907 Walter was imprisoned at HMP Wakefield for Debt, his record show that he was age 46, 5ft 5 1\/2inch tall and weighed 13 \u00bd stone. He was released on the 5th<\/sup> November 1907.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1911 Census:- Walter now age 50 \u2013 occupation Colliery Underground Byeworker and a Boarder  living with his brother Arthur age 58 \u2013 occupation Colliery Labourer, Arthurs wife Elizabeth age 54 \u2013 no occupation, their children James age 20 \u2013 occupation Coal Miner (Hewer) daughter Frances age 13 \u2013 Scholar, Percy age 11 \u2013 Scholar. Also living there is another Boarder Thomas Briggs a widower from Leeds age 56 \u2013 occupation Coal Miner (Hewer). They are living at 19 Church Street, Woodlesford. The Census form has been filled in and signed on behalf of Arthur Hughes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walter was killed in a mining accident at the R &TW Bowers Allerton Main Colliery on the 7th<\/sup> September 1920 and was buried on the 10th<\/sup> September 1920 at St John\u2019s Church, Oulton. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
