John Joseph Goodall the son of John and Elizabeth Goodall was born on the 28th<\/sup> June 1868 at Astley, Swillington. He was baptised on the 27th<\/sup> December 1868 at St Mary Church, Swillington, on the Ancestry detail page his age is shown as 0, but if you check the dates he was actually 6 months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1871 Census:- on the 1871 Census John Joseph is age 2 and is living at home with his parents John and Elizabeth along with his brother Tom age 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1881 Census:- John Joseph now age 12 is still living at home with his parents John and Elizabeth and brother Tom age 16 \u2013 Colliery Pony Driver, Edward age 9, Sam age 8 \u2013 Scholar, his sister Clara age 6 and youngest brother Alfred age 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The address where they are living on both Census Records is Old Engine, Astley, Swillington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the age of 16 John Joseph is employed at T & RW Bowers Allerton Main Colliery as a Driver. On the 7th<\/sup> May 1884 John Joseph was run over by Corves or Corf (alternative spelling) which we know as Mine Carts or Pit Tubs, originally these were human powered but later were hauled by Ponies. John Joseph was driving loaded corves to the the bottom of an incline when a chain snapped and the corves rushed to the bottom of the incline. The corves left the line and dashed against John Joseph and his pony, severely injured he was taken to the Infirmary where he died on the following day the 8th<\/sup> May 1884, the verdict at the Inquest was accidental death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Joseph Goodall was buried on the 11th<\/sup> May 1884 at St Mary Church, Swillington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
